It's amazing what you can miss when you are your own reader. Then she also provided a thorough critique of my novel, pointing out strengths and an inconsistency that needs attention. As a beta reader, Dana provided some of the usual, such as corrected spelling errors and typos and suggested sentence structure improvements, but, more importantly for me, she offered something I had yet to receive from other readers. Her comments reflected how an actual reader might react to my book. And, after all, once we've spelled everything correctly, isn't that what we all want to know? It is clear to me that she actually read my book like a reader would - all the way through, without using a linguist's microscope to pick the language apart. She accurately corrected the things that jumped out at her but mostly read the book and commented as a reader. She let me know which characters were engaging for her (one who seemed unnecessary - she was right on target! - was a character based on one of my grandchildren who really wanted to be in the book.), the level of interest provided by the plot, location and characters, how well the pace of the book suited her (and where it didn't). Dana was not only helpful but also very skillful in being able to suggest where there was room for improvement in a clear but gentle, constructive way which didn't antagonize or create resistance. She spotted a number of improvements which were oversights on my part, but which I will adopt. I’m so glad I had Dana read my manuscript. Even though I’ve had other betas read my story, Dana pointed out typos, inconsistencies and other various grammar mistakes that others didn’t catch.
